What my 20’s are teaching me: Liz from Explore.Dream.Discover.

Today you have Liz from Explore.Dream.Discover!
You know the girl I met up with sight unseen in Paris last year.
annnnd… it was amazing!
She’s here sharing her wisdom on what she’s learned so far in her twenties…
wise, sweet, beautiful girl. that Liz.

Sure I’m only 25 (turning 26 this week!), but when Sarah asked me to share my thoughts on what I’ve learned in my twenties, I quickly thought back to when I was I was a 20-year-old sophomore in college, and how much I’ve changed since then. I actually feel like I’m a completely different person just 6 years later. Here are a few of my most valuable lessons learned:

+you will find someone who loves you with everything he has, treats you right and wants to spend the rest of his life with you. Don’t settle for anything less than that.

+traveling is the best investment you can make. Sure, you’re young and you’re not making much money, but the value you gain from the experience of exploring new places is worth pinching pennies on other things.
+friends come and go – your family is forever. treat them accordingly.

+today is our only guarantee. just because you’re young doesn’t mean you’ve got time to waste on people who don’t appreciate you and jobs you hate. live each day like it’s your last.
+be thankful. Grateful people are happier. It’s easy to focus on the crappy stuff sometimes, but try to remember how blessed you are.
+“Comparison is the thief of joy” – Theodore Roosevelt. In the age of Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and blogs where we all put our best face forward and rarely brag about the fight we had with our husband or our bad hair day, it’s important to stay focused on your life and stop comparing yourself to others – it’s detrimental to your life and happiness!
+don’t worry about the number of friends you have – quality over quantity.
+do what makes you happy – even if that’s not the “cool” thing to do. take pride in knowing what you like and what brings you joy. the people who matter will accept you for who you are and won’t try to change you.

The quality over quantity of friends is something I really embraced in my 20's! Definitely a great list! It (almost) makes me glad I'm leaving my 20's next year b/c I've learned so much 🙂

I recently met Liz in Amsterdam, as we are both expats living in the city. Over the past few months, she has become one of my best girlfriends here..and I have to say, she is as inspiring & level-headed as this blog post portrays. Sometimes, it IS all about slowing down & really focusing on what matters to YOU (not anyone else.)

    Great post series, BTW.
