shopping in marrakech

Shopping in Marrakech is a total and complete dream for someone like me.  I love to shop, and I can’t ever explain why I like what I like, but it’s a total thrill to find things you’ve only dreamed of for a fraction of a price you’d get back home.  I am basically the worst haggler on our trip.  So I’ve had JB or a friend negotiate for me.  I just try to pay a price that I’d be really excited to get it for in the states.  There’s districts for everything – food, clothing, pottery, leather.  There’s donkeys and mopeds and it’s totally nuts at times.  I went on a guided shopping tour – which was a bit of a waste in a way.  But it got us there, and made us comfortable in the souks.  Which was worth it.  We stayed all day, skipped lunch, and I just kept eating random pieces of bread I bought along the way every time I could feel my blood sugar drop.  The reason the guided tour was disappointing is that it took us to cooperatives that are guaranteed their authenticity, which is great for all the skincare and spices, and rugs of course but truly just wanted to wander.  The guides also get a cut, so they only take you to certain places.  But maybe they aren’t all like that!  After the guided tour was over and we were cut loose, we had the best time shopping.  The souks have something like a 1000 different shops inside! What I love most about it, and feel makes it such a unique place, is that artisans are right there making it all.  It’s not made in some remote factory.  You can literally say I need my belt to be this size exactly and they’ll make it right in front of you, or I want you to embroider this on a bag you pick out with these tassels, and boom.  The makers are right there, and you get an insight (and appreciation!) of what you are buying.  Can you tell I love it here?  I do.  I find it so fascinating, and the souks have been a big part of that.  Now I’ve only been to the souks twice, so what do I know?  I will say if you come here, you may want to get a guide, though I would feel very comfortable there if I was with a small group of friends doing it all on our own.  You just may have to pay someone a dollar or two to help you find your way back to the medina.  Anyway, enjoy my MILLION and one photos of our shopping the last two days!shopping in marrakech shopping in marrakech shopping in marrakech shopping in marrakech shopping in marrakech
