I need your help: Lugano vs. Lake Como

My friend, The World’s Best Photographer
will be traveling throughout Italy and Switzerland, and posed the question:
Lugano or Lake Como?
Lugano was the first trip we took on Easter weekend in 2010.
Lake Como was our last trip we took in 2011.
Very different states of mind.
When I was little we went to Lugano and ever since then I would say “lugano is my fave place”…
when I brought JB there I was a little nervous.  Would it be as beautiful as I remembered?
It was.
But then I saw Lake Como a year and some change later… was it awe-inspiring?  yep.
So I fear I won’t be of much help.

Soooo fellow travelers, dreamers, ex-pats, vagabonds, researchers…
Have you been to either?
places to stay?
where to eat?
Give me the details.
per favore.

I am also no help because I've been to neither, but hands down Lake Como. George Clooney lives there, duh.

I'm Italian and have family that live near the Lake Como region so that's why I would say go there. BUT, I've never been to Lugano and it looks just as beautiful and breath taking.
Seems I'm no help, either. But the Italian in me says como πŸ˜‰

That's such a tough decision because they're both amaaazing! I took two day trips to each place and was also in very different states of mind so I appreciated them differently. I did leave Lugano wishing I had more time there, I found there to be fewer tourists and it really is such a unique part of Switzerland so I say go to Lugano!

But, they're so close to each other so maybe she can fit both in?

I'm afraid I'm no help either being as I haven't been to either. I've heard more about Lake Como, but both places look equally beautiful.

I am in favor Lake Como!! We discovered it late one night when I was 14 and my sweet Dad was over the train trip with 3 girls and my mom! We got off in the dark and headed to the hotel. When we woke up I do not think I have ever seen anything so beautiful! The water is just incredible! I saw Lake Como… but I have not been to Lugano πŸ™‚

I have lived in Lugano for a while last year.I think it has few really nice spots plus there is so many nice things around. Monte Generoso is a must for example πŸ™‚ But Lake Como is so close to Lugano that if someone is going in that direction he can easily do both.
But yes as I said: I vote for Lugano πŸ™‚

Lake Como! Then take the ferry boat up the lake to Belaggio. They serve lunch and everything. It's the cutest!

Lake Como is so magical. My husband has seen both and he votes Como too. I don't think you can make a wrong choice here though.

I have been to both and I love them dearly. However, I would recommend Lake Como to Jessica, it is just out of this world.
Another place that has a BIG place in my heart is the small town of Ascona, close to Locarno, at the Lago Maggiore. It is wonderful and the close Valleys of the river Maggia and Versasca are absolutely stunning – check some pictures here:

Hope this helps!! I am so jealous!!
    xox, happy weekend Sarah!

I also fear you are no help because now I am going to be begging my husband to take me to BOTH places and I'm sure he will appreciate my constant nagging and the dent it will place in his wallet.

I will just send him your way if he has any problems with it πŸ˜‰

Why must she choose one?? They are both spectacular, as you can attest. I love Bellagio and just driving around the Lake Como area, but like others have said Lugano is such a unique part of Switzerland. I think I might have to go with Lugano!

My recommendation: From Lugano-Paradiso, catch a fifteen-minute funicular ride up to the top of Monte San Salvatore for 360-degree views of Lake Lugano or for the start of some beautiful hikes. πŸ™‚

I'be been to lugano and stayed at the continental park hotel. It was amazing!!!! Splurge for their suite if you can. We were nervous because it looks like its right next to the train station but you would never know. Dead quiet with beautiful grounds, pool and vineyard. Definitely recommend!! It's an oasis inside the city!

Can I suggest Lake Garda instead? Stunning, stunning lake and the most beautiful hotel ever to stay at, the Villa Arcadio. Would go back in a second.

so I FINALLY have my booty in gear and am weighing in… (a day late & a dollar short?), but i can only speak for Lake Como & Lake Maggiore. Como's Villa D'Este, Verbania's Grand Hotel Magestic, or a lazy b&b in Stresa… any/all of these would be perfect! (though i think Grand Hotel Majestic is has the best affordable – luxury ratio, which is VERY favorable to me.) πŸ™‚
