how to land an internship

You may or may not know that Sarah Tucker Events has a summer intern!
Who came all the way from South Carolina!
I oddly enough get a lot of inquiries about interning.
Sometimes it’s just for wedding days, and sometimes it is for class credit, or experience.
While I will always respond, even if it takes me a while.  I definitely don’t always take people up on it.  Caroline’s the first person where I seriously considered it.
you know, beyond the extra hands on wedding days. {which i am so grateful for!}
I thought it might be helpful to share what stood out to me and why I picked miss Caroline out of the bunch.   You know, in case you ever hope to intern with someone in a creative business field.
First impressions matter.
And usually that first impression is in the form of an email.
95% of my job is via email, so if someone isn’t gracious, positive and warm in an email … I am not impressed.  Her email was so upbeat and made me feel good about my craft.
Her excitement came across in the email and I loved that.
I was impressed and intrigued.
Another bit about email… since this is so much of what I do, it really speaks for my brand a lot of the time.  And I feel 100% comfortable having Caroline represent my brand through that capacity.
Next thing is – trust.
I have a pretty decent gut when it comes to these things.
A lot of time trust has to be earned, but sometimes you just feel at home with a person.
And right off the bat I trusted caroline with my passwords, my car (literally), in my home, and around my most precious babe.
She’s smart.
Her resume was excellent and at just 21, you could tell she was really going after her dreams.
again, impressive!
Our vision is similar.  It’s rare when I’m like – yes!  we have similar taste!  She totally does and it puts me at ease when she’s recommending ideas to clients.
She didn’t judge me ( at least not out loud) when she came to my house and my hair was anything but neat.  (:
The whole experience has been a great one.  She’s really helping me with a lot of projects I’ve wanted to do but just haven’t had time, and helping me provide better service to my clients.
Soooo Caroline – we think you’re the best!
And good luck to all of those applying for internships / jobs.
remember…
A little graciousness, thoughtfulness and creativity goes a long way.
