Cusco, Peru Day One

We’re back!  It has been a whirlwind week.  I can’t believe it was just a week we were gone – with all we saw, it feels like two weeks.  We normally don’t push two cities even into a week, so three was a little wild.  I have so much Peru coming up, and thought I’d do it by day.  We did fly into Lima and spend one night, and I’ll include the hotel in a separate post.  But sadly, we didn’t do anything but sleep and eat.  I wish we would have extended there, but with the kids just going back to school we didn’t want to rock the boat.

After our first night in Cusco, we had a city tour with Sergio from Belmond staff.  He was the very best tour guide, I think I’ve ever had.  He taught us about the Incan empire in such a relatable way through storytelling and role playing.  It really made it all come alive.

We first started at Saqsaywaman, an Incan complex with huge stone walls, and then went to Koricancha, an Incan temple.  It was so interesting learning all about the Incan empire – how they did things, and how complex their systems were for that time.

We ate at Papachos for lunch (so so good!) and then ate at Chicchas for dinner.  JB wanted to try Guinea Pig (soo gross!), and that he did.  We had a great first day in Cusco, and of course I was transfixed by the baby lambs and alpacas.
