confessions of a non tomboy

when i was really young i had a couple of friends who were tomboys.
i was not a tomboy.  i am all girl.
at 4 years old my room was laura ashley striped pink with roses.
degas ballet prints covered the walls.
i refused to wear anything other than dresses.
and then…
I remember the day my tomboy friends came over for the first time.
and made fun of me!  for being such a girl…
so began my struggle to try to be a tomboy, but knowing I am anything but.
eventually, i gave up this false me.
my point here is, whatever you are.
be you.

Happy Friday!!

WHAT!? why are kids such jerks. i got made fun of for being a tomboy. Oh geeze. Glad I can say now "hey, those biker shorts got me to level 5 in gymnastics because of all the practice i got on the bars at lunch ya punks"

being yourself is SO much better than being what people want you to be. but sometimes that comes with a lot of pressure. great post, sarah! have a wonderful weekend!

I LOVE that quote! New Girl is my new favorite show ever!!! I have an infinite girlcrush on Zooey Deschanel anyway, but that show is so funny… she's talking to her roommate's horrible lawyer girlfriend…. I just like that it makes quirky normal. πŸ™‚

I was definitely a tom boy, but I can't remember ever making fun of anyone for being a girly girl! My mom would try to put dresses on me and I would throw them under the bed and put my sweat pants on. At least this is what she tells me. A few weeks ago, my friend called me girly and I guess I hadn't really ever thought of myself as girly, but I guess things change!

    Just lovely!!!!!!! xoxo A-

I was the same way! I wore my pink Minnie Mouse bathing suit under everything and refused to wear anything but dresses! Its funny because my job now requires me to dress more like a tomboy! Funny how things work out.

I ADORE New Girl, Zooey, and that quote. I was a tomboy myself, never really understanding what my sister did with all those dolls, but I certainly can't stand people that make others feel bad for who they are. Awful!

It sounds like we were very similar little nuggets. Roses and striped Laura Ashley and nonstop dresses. Except, I never stopped. I am still the same way. I sneak pink in whenever I can and wear dresses at every possible occasion. Love this quote!

Eeek! We are twins! I was/am such a girly girl. My kindergarten teacher still remembers me as the girl who wore a dress every day, even if I was hanging from the monkey bars or in the sand box. My dad used to say he'd pay me $5 if I wore jeans, I really need to collect on that. When I moved to Connecticut in 5th grade, my next door neighbor was the another girl the same age as me. she told me I was going to be a girly girl and I ran inside and cried to my mom. I was so afraid I wouldn’t fit in! #girlygirlsforev

love zooey. love new girl. I was half tomboy, half girly girl. for a whole year (age 3), I would only wear "pinkness". As in, pink dresses. The same year, my dad found me trying to pee standing up, like a boy, because all of my friends were boys. I didn't understand why I couldn't!
Now, I'm ALL girl and quite happy with it πŸ™‚

that is so funny…I used to be such a tomboy…I was that girl who had those friends like you. BUT the funniest thing happened..when I realized I was SUPER girly and sporty and tough all in one. I rock my sneakers and my glitter when I run a race, I wear my hot pink bikini when I surf & I have now become that (gasp) girl who loves puppies and dessert and mushy movies… AND i don't care! whoo hoo.. πŸ™‚

    Great Post Sarah! :-)\

I think I found the owner of the graphic?

I used to be the biggest girly girl. I only wore dresses when I was little and everything was pink. I even wore pink cat eye sunglasses and a fur coat. When I turned 12, even though I was still in gymnastics, I started turning into a tomboy! Now I'm still stuck in that rut and trying to hard to be girly again!

I think how we were as children really does foreshadow how we'll be as adults, to some extent. For example, I was always exceedingly awkward and confused about my style… lol. I still feel that way much of the time today! πŸ˜› It's a journey… I hope to come out of it a supremely girly, stylish woman someday. πŸ™‚ (kind of like YOU!)

OMGosh Sarah! I LOVE this post and that you put Zooey Deschanel (and her New Girl quote) in here! I was always "ALL GIRL", no tomboy-ness in me at all. It's funny how "previous tomboys" claim that title like it was such a prud thing to be, but somehow, being "super girly" never gets the same kind of street cred? Anyhow – adore this post and your childhood pic – so sweet!

I didn't start embracing the fun side of being feminine until I met the lord. before that I dressed like a little skanky-pooch. the breasts were out the jeans were made to show off the tush and I never wore heels because I didn't understand them adn they scared me.

Now people say something to me when I'm in flats. I feel awkward not being taller than all my guy friends. I wear lipstick because my lips feel naked without a nice color on them. I don't understand how I only own a few dresses because it makes me feel like I have nothing to wear… And tights that are colorful or skintoned stockings from nordstrom get me excited!!!

praise the Lord, I never want to go back! haha

I was right in the middle — all I wanted to do was wear dresses and I loved everything purple , but I also loved to play sports! I got made fun of by BOTH sides, so unfortunately I just think you can't win sometimes!

Although, as I grew older, I could definitely tell that pre-judgments were being made just because I like girly things. I can be smart and still wear nice clothes!

I totally had that pink stripes / roses Laura Ashley set! And I love the quote from "New Girl". As for being a tom boy vs. girly girl, I have definitely gone through phases as both, and I'm at the point where I try to combine both (think j.crew pencil skirts and one of the men's button down shirts!).

I too struggled to be more "tomboy" as a kid b/c somehow that was cooler. With zero athletic ability & a dislike for the outdoors, it didn't work. Glad to also be a complete girl now!
