A day in the Basque Hills

I randomly booked a tour through Airbnb before we flew over.  I wanted to do something fun as a family while JB was still here!  My in laws were down to come along as well.  It ended up being such a gorgeous day.  From the weather, to the activities, and the yummy food – we really felt like we lucked out!  It was as if we were Basque for the day (:

We started in the mountains, about an hour away from San Sebastian on a cheese farm where they also make bread.  Met the sheep that made our delicious cheese!  We enjoyed cider and a traditional bread fresh out of the oven with a quiche typical to this area, along with sampling all of the cheeses they made.  The boys loved the farm, and the little farm girl who was maybe two.  I was obsessed with their blue cheese – I don’t think I’ve ever had better.  We got to see it all, and meet the families that make it happen.

Then we started on a little hike.  The tour guides 8 year old nephew came with us, while he met us at the farm where the hike ended.

I was in hog heaven at this little organic farm – flowers, honey, cherries eaten right off the branch.  The owners were so sweet and as “off the grid” as it gets.

We picked our salad – onions and some delicious butter leaf and had it at our next stop – a Gastronomic Club.

We felt like we were dining like kings and queens at this gastronomic club.  It’s basically like a country club where you cook, they wash dishes and provide the alcohol.  It was so fun being with all of the locals and all of the families.  After lunch wes took a nap in JBs lap while Tuck played hand ball and jai alai with our tour guide’s nephew.  Julen, our tour guide, described it as heaven when they were kids.  Just a place to run free and be with family.  That’s for sure what it felt like that afternoon.  Julens father prepared the meal, and it really was such an honor to be there!

what a dreamy day!  If you’re in San Sebastian, we can’t recommend Julen’s tour enough!
