cleaning up my make up drawer

Read more about why you want to avoid these here.

So I basically kiss Tuck (and JB!) a thousand times a day.  Which means I’m rubbing whatever I’ve slathered and powdered on, all over their innocent little faces.  There are so many areas of my life I have no problem giving up to be healthier but honestly my last, and hardest to give up, is my make up drawer.  Because I’m always a little more than skeptical if it’s actually going to work as good as the chemical laden ones.  And yes, I realize how big of a hypocrite I am to say – buy this one thing because it’s free of ____ but forget about all of the @$#% you put on your face every.day.  So off I went to research, and make a few investments to clean up my make up.  You’ve likely heard of the Environmental Working Group but did you know they have an app?  Their skin deep app has most of the products we use for washing or painting our faces – with a scale from 1-10.  1 being the least amount of harm that product will cause and 10 being – get that stuff in the trash!  You can even scan barcodes instead of typing it in while shopping.
So I’ve been one by one cleaning up.  Letting go with clenched fists but slowly and surely getting it out of my make up drawer.
There are a few things I don’t have to toss.
–  Tarte’s mascara.  It’s a 4 on the EWG skin deep rating.  Though this BareMinerals one is a 2 and has good reviews.  So I’m picking some up.  Anyone use it before?
–  my lipstick in petal from the Beauty Counter.  It has an EWG score of 1.  PS: one thing I love about  the beauty counter is that they show you what score every single product is on the EWG right on their page.

But the BB cream I’ve been slathering on without fail every morning is the first to get changed.  Neither the new one or my old one are on EWG but you can take one look at the ingredients and know which one is healthy and which one you should toss.  But common sense rule: You can pronounce it?  You know what that is?  it’s likely pretty safe.  You can’t pronounce all but two ingredients – probbbbbbably need to back away.  The new one is much creamier and lighter, a bit more moisturizing but doesn’t have as much coverage as the old one.  But knowing that I’m not slathering up in toxins every day gives me peace of mind.

Next up, my blush.  I looooove Nars.  it’s my fave.  but it’s a 6.  but I begrudgingly and with little faith switched to Tarte’s amazonian clay in captivating.  And you know what?  I like it just as much, if not more than the Nars I was using.  I feel like I’m cheating!  But I do.

I have a few things I’m still trying to let go of – one being my beloved under eye concealer.  Which is actually not on the EWG at this point, but one look at the ingredients and I spy “paraben”.  So I’m on the hunt for that along with eye liner, and eye shadow!  If you have pigmentation issues and need a hyperpigmentation treatment then finding the right concealer is totally tricky but when you do, it’s awesome!
I can be such an “ignorance is bliss” type person, but when it comes to the health of not just me, but my family – I really do feel like I got to get my act together and not put them in harms way.  Even with my million smooches.  Any good natural make up y’all love?  Would love to hear!
