Traveling with Baby

what i wore: I generally wear the same outfit for travel, with some variation.  Comfy jeans or pixie pants from j.crew, a cardigan, a button down tank (so i could nurse) a scarf, this time a hat so I wouldn’t have to do my hair, and some slide on and off flip flops.  If it’s a longer flight I’d probably wear something different, or pack socks, or wear boots.  But this was good for our short flight + destination.  Something with  easily removable layers like this is great for whizzing through security.  I carried him in his infant pack on through.  {and why yes, this is the latest pack, the cheapest, and the one that’s working best for now}

what i read to calm my fears before:  This book by the girl behind lucie’s list (great resource for new mamas).  Super helpful quick read and super free if you have amazon prime.

getting milk/liquids through:  I had pumped a bottle of milk that morning, mostly because I was afraid of getting there and having a long car ride in his car seat (the horror!) without being able to nurse.  We didn’t end up using it, and had our own car.  BUT it was easy getting through security.  Each bottle has to be 3.5oz, and I just put it in a ziploc.  One TSA agent tested my hands, and admired Tuck.

In my carry on:  I used my  diaper bag as my only carry-on  (thanks britt!)
-a nursing cover Pam made me
a pronto changing station (JB loves this and i do too) with travel wipes from honest and diapers too.
– anti-bacterial wipes and mini hand sanitizer.( (i wiped down the tray table and seat like a mad lady)
-and i had JB deal with passports, because he’s way more responsible than i am.  true story.

Packing for a week with a newborn:
-we were provided with a crib in our room.  It was beautiful!  but it had legit feather pillow bumpers, and so far I just can’t go the bumper route.  So we used our handy travel bassinet!
– I packed a whole pack of the honest diapers, and a big thing of wipes.  We definitely didn’t run out!
(though you could always just purchase them there, which is what we will do when we go to Swizzie and Italy in the summer)
-unless you purchase an extra seat for a lap infant, you don’t get an extra bag.  We were fine with our two checked bags.  And actually came home with a lot of unused Tuck clothing.
– I did pack our pump … i only was away from Tuck the morning I went to the spa.  and honestly as bulky and annoying as it was to bring… I wouldn’t have totally relaxed if I knew there might be a hungry tuck in the room waiting. I probably should have purchased a hand pump.  you live and learn.
– you can check your car seat and/or stroller for no fee.

The Flight: The flight over was perfect.  Not even a whimper.  I nursed (first time in public/even though i had a cover, still a little weird) in the beginning and on the descent until landing.  The flight coming back I nursed him a bit too early, so he was not so interested in it when the time came and instead wanted to sleep.  JB said he cried for a minute.  When your baby is crying a minute seems like an eternity!  Once he started nursing again, he was fine.  The descent was great.  Moral of the story:  they need something to suck on. a booboo, pacifier, a bottle.  whatever.   He slept mostly and I even got to watch a movie!

Happy trails to you and yours!
