unlikely creative

I've been thinking about how we take on roles that we're given.
labels people give you, the ones you give yourself ...  and sometimes labels can really put you in a box.  for most of my life i've been a little too serious to ever think i had a couple different labels going for me.  {omg i might be multifaceted.}
and up until recently I never would have given myself the coveted creative label.
i have a masters in science!  i could spend all day reading!  i'm messy! ... i would tell myself.
i have no obvious talents that make people want to naturally encourage me to be creative.
i have terrible {thee poorest} hand writing, take little care to arrange food to make it look pretty, and the extent of my drawing abilities lie in stick figures.
but oh how i love art. appreciate it.  and always have. in its many forms.
i come alive around beauty.
its not uncommon for me to be so overwhelmed by emotion to cry over a painting, a delicious meal, a perfectly wrapped present, an honest photograph ... beauty arrests my heart.  and often.
but i always thought - those pretty things that people created were for others.
certainly not me.
i did not see myself as creative, talented, beautiful.
and even after people coming into my life with eyes that see beyond the surface
telling me
"you're so creative"
i brushed it off.
thinking they were just trying to be nice to me.
{holy low self esteem in this area
but recently i've decided that i am creative.
and this blog, and all y'all (that's plural for y'all btw) have helped me discover that.
and maybe it is just in the clothes i pick out sometimes, or the way i arrange a wall above my desk, or the way i know exactly what i like by eyeing it.
but i'm creative.

I am CREATIVE.

and so are you.
we were all made to be.
in one way or another.

  1. Coming from an "art school kid" who works at a "creative job" and has all sorts of "creative talent".. I always call BS when people whine that they aren't creative. EVERYONE is creative, it's just learning how to channel your creativity! People are too afraid to mess up if they try, it's sad!!

Kudos to you for realizing that you are creative!

  5. One of the reasons holding me up from starting my own blog has been: how could I ever be as creative as Sarah with her awesome blog? You're amazing & I needed to hear your words today. Thank you!

  7. this is so lovely. Sometimes I feel the same way- I don't arrange things pretty, i'm the messiest girl I know, and i certainly cannot draw/sketch/paint for the life of me (although I WAS a ballerina for many years, much younger years of course).. so thank you. thank you for sharing this. thank you for reminding me that yes indeed, I am all the things i dream of being (:

  8. Love this post. I completely agree. As an accountant, it is sometimes hard for me to actually consider myself as creative. In fact, I almost always here that accountants are anything but creative. I think that hearing this all of the time I actually started limiting myself, thinking that people are right, I really am not creative. After I started to blog however, I realized that this isn't the case at all!

    Great post!

  10. Beautiful, Sarah! You are creative; it's so evident in the carefully placed details of your outfits, the lightness in your photography, and the sweetness of your personality. Thank you for the encouragement; it was much needed today. :)

  11. I love ALL OF THIS. And yes sister, you are mighty creative (yes, that is a strong way of being creative). This was exactly what I needed to hear as well because I think I let the devil speak other things even when I know we were created to be creative!!! THank you...for creating words that create inspiration that move hearts.

  16. Love your transparencyI guess b/c I'm fairly new to your blog I'm just shocked that you wouldn't think of yourself as creative. Shocked! It's funny how we see ourselves isn't it? Gonna ponder this one for a while, thanks!

  18. I LOVE this. I have a BS in Chemistry and want to go to med school, and I have never thought of myself as creative. But I love to dance, could spend alllll day wandering through an art museum, and am the only 21 year old opera lover I've ever met. I'm slowly realizing that you don't have to be an artist to be creative - and you are definitely creative!!

I especially love the "creative" use of all y'all - a true southern girl after my own heart!

  23. I feel like I've always wanted to be creative, but wasn't as talented as the artists and creatives around me, but its true. I am in charge of my own labels and you know what, I am creative and talented.

  26. I love this post as I often feel like creativity is NOT one of my strong suits although I wish terribly that it was.

But, I will say that I've always pinned you as the creative type - I love your blog, your pics are always so artistically taken and your outfits are amazing!

  29. I loved this post it has brightened up my day!

Like you I have never really felt entitled to the creative label as I was the one who was good at maths and the more academic subjects so creativity was never really encouraged.

But what you said is true, everyone is creative in their own way...even me!

    Have a great weekend!

  35. I found your blog via Breakfast at Toast and I'm glad I did. Thank you for this post. I've just moved away from home and am living in an unfamiliar area. It's been a challenge, but ever since I created a blog ...it has my "creative" juices flowing. We are all not the same, we are all different in our own special way.
I look forward to reading more of your posts!
