Bite Size Health Tip #1

I am usually a little sheepish about sharing health advice.
But my heart has been tugging on me a bit to do it here. . .
First, a little background for anyone who may be new here.
Once upon a time I was a teacher.
I've taught personal and community health to high school students and Ole Miss college kids.
I've got an M.S.
in Health Promotion.
Basically, public health with an emphasis on prevention.
Most recently, I was working in an edible schoolyard.
Gardening with kids, picking the fruits(&veggies) of our labor and then cooking, tasting, and
enjoying them.

My main squeeze is veggies and fruits.
In grad school I was solely devoted toward ways to get kids to eat more of them,
thus preventing quality of life stealers like cardiovascular disease, obesity, hypertension, diabetes etc.
...

So I thought, every once in a while, I should post on, what else?
HEALTH
because above all, i'd really love my readers to be healthy.
healthy = happy
& I'm breaking them down into easily absorbed bite sized health tips.

...

So today's health tip/challenge ...
DRINK MORE WATER

Why?

  • First of all, the human body is made up of 60-65% water.
  • Eight glasses of water a day helps maintain our health.  But sometimes quantity might vary depending on life-style, nutrition, where you live (i.e. in FL, you'll need more).
  • Our bodies need so much water because almost every single cell in our bods need water to function properly.
  • Our lungs expel about 3 cups of water through normal breathing - a day!
  • When we perspire, (not including exercise) we eliminate two cups of water a day.
  • soft drinks slow down the absorption of fluids into the body.
  • drinking water helps you prevent overeating

...

Ways to drink more water:

#1.  I drink a BIG glass of water first thing in the morning.
I've gone 8 or so hours without a drop of water, my body is dehydrated!
#2.  If you have a hard time drinking just water,
{please do not drink crystal light or anything with saccharin}
you can always drop some refreshing fruit in a pitcher or your glass.
The above photo is for a shower- so my mom and i went a little overboard!
But for some good fruit infused water use: cucumbers, kiwis, strawberries, lemon, lime...
#3, chart it!
I haven't done this, but it might help you.   free printables - found here.

#4.  Always carry a water bottle with you (BPA free, of course)
Make sure its cute.
I don't know why, but when my bottle is cute, I drink more water.
vain = me & my bottle

(no picture or this one)
#5.  Look at your urine.
if it's clear, you're drinking enough.
If it's dark and smells funny, you may not be drinking enough.
(of course, ask your doctor if you drink more water, and it's still dark)

#6.
drink herbal tea!

...

Hope this post encourages you to drink more water (:
Let me know if there's a specific health topic you'd like me to cover in the comments.

with everything, don't overdo it!
It is possible to have water intoxication, hyponatremia - basically depleting your body the sodium it needs.
So with everything, moderation.

  3. Love it! I've always known I need to drink lots of water, but I always forget. I LOVE the idea of the water chart. I might invest in one of those :)
Looking forward to more health posts!

  4. Love water. Always have. BUT,,,, I know I don't drink eight glasses a day. That's REALLY too much for me. Fresh lemon in my water is my cup of tea so to speak. I cringe at the people that always carry around the little crystal light packages....seriously just drink the water plain guys..it won't kill ya!

  5. i love water and i love this topic. it actually makes me cringe when people claim they "hate water."

anywho, i have the Camel Back water bottle, similar to the one you have pictured (but it's purple, so it's super cute). it is the easiest thing to drink water out of, and i swear it forces me to drink more! just one bottle is 3 cups of water. the straw that it comes with is similar to a baby bottle (haha) so drinking out of it is basically effort list. i totally recommend it!

  10. I love this, Sarah! Thanks for sharing. I had no idea you had an MS in Health Promotion. I'm getting ready to return to grad school next Fall to get an MS in Exercise Science & Nutrition. The biggest thing I'm struggling with about this is what to do with my degree after I get it! Any ideas on a career path with this kind of degree? I love health and wellness so it's right up my alley!

  13. Thank you for this today! I'm notoriously horrible at drinking water, and as a runner I end up having the WORST side aches when I don't drink enough. This was a great reminder!

  14. Thank You for the ideas! I drink mostly water, with the occasionaly juice and a Dr. Enuf (local bottling company, you'll be hooked if you ever find one, normall in the south.)

Thanks for the ideas, I printed the checklist!

  16. I love this post Sarah! As a pregnant gal, I'm trying so hard to drink as much as possible! A student of mine gave me this gigantic BPA-free bottle that holds over a liter! It's so cute, so I want to drink from it all the time. Today I added a splash of Simply Lemonade Raspberry to it and it lasted me all afternoon! You're right about the Crystal Light and other artificial sweeteners...they are so bad for you! The marketers for these products have really pulled the wool over people's eyes!

  17. how are you friends with me?? my posts must disgust you. no but seriously i love this..i used to teach health to high school students (mainly focusing on just maintaining good body image and healthy diets to avoid eating disorders etc..) this was when i was working in the fashion industry and was overwhelmed by the amount of teen eating disorders.

    you are my hero.

  18. I love that you posted this! I have always been pretty health savvy, but with two little boys who won't eat veggies to SAVE THEIR LIVES, I am trying to be even more so.

Maybe a health post on how to get little ones to eat their veggies?????

  20. You should see me at work - I gulp water like nobody's business. The minute we get busy I die for water. The problem is I also have the world's smallest bladder so... the two don't mix.

  22. Great way to encourage people to drink water. I drink about a gallon a day and have to use the bathroom constantly, but it's worth it for how much I'm helping my body.

The only way I can be sure to drink, is making sure I have 2 glasses full at all times. Keeps me from having to get up so often to fill up. Having those 2 there make me want to drink more often. :)

  25. I'm definitely one of the Non Water drinkers out there but I know how important it is for me and my health.

I've definitely been doing better with the water drinking though than before (not drinking any) now I have probably 2 glasses a day.

  28. great post! water is by far my favorite drink (although perrier and coconut water come close to second and third).. I always carry a 32+oz water bottle with me. Whenever I don't have it, man..I get sooo upset! like "how could I possibly have been this unprepared?" silly, I know, but thinking back maybe 5 years ago, I don't think I ever drank water- only sodas... PS I've found mint infused fizzy water at our local grocery store- SOOOOO delicious!

  29. Thanks for this post! I suffered from headaches a lot as a little girl, and now I realize it was because I never drank water. Horrible! I'm SO into the water thing now... I always carry a water bottle with me wherever I go. People make fun of me because of it, but hey! I'd rather be healthy and hydrated than sickly and dehydrated! =)
